The Natives are Restless. Or is that Nativists?
By Patrick Osio

Last November US nativists were handed their lunch, and they didn’t find it easy to swallow. To their shock Barrack Obama was elected President of the United States, and that was only part of the bad news for them – the champions of Nativism lost seat after seat in Congress and the Senate. They were so sure that America thinks like them. After all in their mind, they are the true patriots, the true defenders of the holy grail of Americanism.

And their Americanism is quite simple – if you are not a white Euro-American it’s OK for you to be here but as a subservient class, and not too many can be here at any one time because it’s un-American for non Euro-American whites to be in the minority, and that means in complete control of the government.

For four years prior to the presidential elections they were out in full force, on television, radio programs, newspaper columns, city councils, state assemblies, halls of Congress – you name it and there they were. Their message was as simple as their mantra – if you’re brown of skin, you are here illegally and all illegal must be rounded up and thrown out of the country and not be allowed back in. We must fence in America’s southern border, with electrical fencing if need be.

Two of the leaders, or so they thought, even went as far as running for President but to their shock and dismay – even the party they thought was theirs said no to them, and in a big way.  Former Congressman Tom Tancredo of bomb Mecca fame, truly thought himself as the savior of the nation with his calls for Americans to demonize Mexicans be they US citizens, or legally or illegally in the US. He truly believed that Americans were ready to follow him down the road of fascism, though he called it saving Western Culture. He didn’t answer the bell for the fourth round, so he slithered into obscurity, left wondering how can the nation be so blind? He now wants back in on the speakers circuit, but will run out of the building when he fears things are getting hot. After all, this is the patriot who at a time when military service was mandatory, got out of serving because of a “mental” disorder.

And there was also Congressman Duncan Hunter, of build a fence, build it high, dig a trench, dig it deep, light the border, light it bright fame. Ah yes, he too thought his day had come. He had paid his dues, for a couple of decades he never missed an opportunity to demean Mexico and Mexicans. They represented part of the Evil Empire out to take back the lost territories. They were an invasion and he would as President complete the job of fencing us in to protect us from the invasion of crop pickers, gardeners, bus boys, and all those menial laborers coming across the border. Poor Hunter, he attracted crowds of fives and tens in small dinners, most gathered to get out of the freezing winter temperatures in mid-west states and wondered who this loco Californian was. He didn’t answer the bell for the second round. But he still makes the speaker rounds trying to convince people that crop pickers are the greatest threat to the nation.

And how about the supporting cast of nativists? Personalities like Lou Dobbs who truly believes that America really pays attention to his trademark scowl telling the nation how wrong things are that he has not blessed. Dobbs really believed that America would vote Dobbs and those elected would then have to beat a path to kiss his ring and get their instructions. Well, he has to continue being satisfied that he has his job left and that as entertainers go, he is still a good one attracting the disenchanted white nativists who hang on his words and scowls.

But the greatest nativists supporting cast have to be Mark Kikorian, Center of. Immigrant Studies, Roy Beck, Numbers USA, and the other nativists in organizations either founded or funded or both by John Tanton, the High Priest of the anti immigration, legal or illegal from Latin American, Caribbean, Asia and Africa. What a shock it must have been to them. Here the nation elects not only a black man, but one whose roots to foreign countries are not more than one generation ago. One can only imagine the board meeting with Tanton and his apostles the day after Obama was elected. What hysteria, how can this have happened? What now? Oh Lord, the nation is lost!

But the list is not complete without mentioning Pat Buchannan. The also wannabe president who was soundly defeated in 1992, when his party denied him the presidential nomination. He wondered how he could have been denied the nomination, and afterwards only getting around 5 percent of the popular vote running as an independent – he had been a speech writer for the messiah of conservatism, Ronal Reagan; he was a well known columnist, television talk show guest and book writer – didn’t that qualify him?. And to top it, his sister, Babe, was his Campaign Manager. How could he have gone wrong?  And Babe has now developed her own brand, but this was after undergoing a make-over. It’s not that she is ugly; it’s that she looked like her brother Pat with long hair, and he is one ugly dude. Two of the purest American Nativists as ever could be.

So the setting is complete – the American Nativists are gathering themselves once again to renew their long standing practice of preaching their brand of democracy, abusing freedom of speech, demeaning people who are different, but now to achieve their goals, they must destroy President Obama as he stands in their way as no one in the history of the nation has.

And so it begins again.
