1964 All over again

By Raoul Lowery Contreras/HispanicVista.com

“…We cannot escape the conclusion that the Democratic Senate leadership was more interested in keeping the immigration issue alive in the run up to mid-terms than in enacting immigration reform legislation. If this is not true, then we look forward to being proven wrong and eating crow.”
Douglas Rivlin, National Immigration Forum

The truth is that the immigration crisis lies at the feet of Democratic Senators, not smugglers, not employers, not Mexican boys and girls, or young men and women walking across the Arizona desert risking their lives for a lousy job.

Specifically, we find that New York Senator Charles Schumer stopped the Senate compromise reached by Republicans and Democrats for political reasons. He heads the Democrat Senate Campaign Committee; his job is to elect Democrats, not to legalize Mexican workers few of whom are in his New York.

There lies the heart of the issue. Democrats are more interested in politics than in solving the problems of millions of hard working men and women hiding in the shadows.

Among Republicans, we know where most stand; most are for a sensible immigration bill that contains border protection and a guest worker program.

Democrats don’t seem to be interested. We don’t see Democratic congress people marching in the largest political demonstrations in American history.

Where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? They are against comprehensive immigration reformation. Their opposition smacks of pure racism. If the illegals were not Mexicans, if they were Black Jamaicans, these petty little men would be leading the marches. They are not.

We see prominent Republican Senators leading the way for reform. We do not see the Black Congressional Caucus helping out or debating with nutty Republican morons like Tom Tancredo. No, the Democratic leadership is meekly hanging back in an effort to take advantage of the crisis. They are not helpful; they are co-conspirators with idiotic congressmen like Tom Tancredo and James F., Sensenbrenner (Junior).

We should not forget that it was Democratic votes that passed the Sensenbrenner bill that would turn millions of American business people and social service volunteers, priests and pastors into felons.

Democrat Charles Schumer and Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid are the people standing in the way of a comprehensive immigration reform.

On the Republican side there are idiots. Tom Tancredo, James F. Sensenbrenner (Junior), J.D Hayworth (a graduate of Bob Jones Psuedo University) are the leading Congressional Republican idiots. One should notice, however, that with the exception of Sensenbrenner, Tancredo or Hayworth are not in the Congressional Republican leadership, nor do they have any real say in what might come out of a conference with the Senate on immigration.

Interestingly, there is historical precedent for what the Democrats are doing on immigration. It is on Civil Rights. Racist Democrats like Arkansas Senator William J. Fullbright and U.S. Senator Al Gore (Senior) led the fight against the 1964 civil rights bill. That bill would free the American Black population from the quasi-slavery forced on it by despicable Southern White Democrats like Fullbright, Gore, Mississippi’s Ross Barnett, and George Wallace of Alabama. Then there was Democrats like Orville Faubus of Arkansas and the White Citizen Councils of Mississippi.

It was Republican Senate Leader Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois who mobilized Republican senators to vote for the Civil Rights bill. More Republican Senators voted for that liberating bill than Democrats. Of course, no one wants to admit to that today. Today’s Black Congressional Caucus won’t admit to the truth of it, nor does anyone in the Democratic Party. They were as phony then as they are today. Of course, only one Black congressman even existed then; he was Adam Clayton Powell. He was censured by a White Democrat led Congress in a motion by San Diego Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin.

Make no mistake about it, it is Democrats who are standing in the way of comprehensive immigration reform, or legalization of those already here; or for those who would come legally to work temporarily if they could. Those Republican idiots who demand a fascist state are just that -- fascist jerks. These are the very kind of people who rounded up United States citizens of Japanese backgrounds and stuffed them into machine gun guarded concentration camps.

They can easily be handled when the Senate passes its immigration bill, if it is allowed to vote on the compromise bill in the Senate. If, the Democrats bow to pressure and stand aside to allow an up or down vote on comprehensive immigration reform. Perhaps the thousands of people hitting the streets in the next few days and weeks will wake Democrats Charles Schumer and Harry Reid up so they won’t go down in history as the 2006 facsimiles of William Fullbright, Al Gore, Orville Faubus, Ross Barnett or George Wallace.
