Don’t Judge Us by Our Government
By Sal Osio

The government of the Unites States does not represent the people. It has betrayed our trust. It is controlled by the small minority of zealots, supremacists and greedy special interests. Minority activists, the religious right, and American supremacists whose greed is nourished by political operatives under their influence and control, have taken over the reigns of power from the people.

Democracy’s Achilles heel is the concentration of economic power in the few. Capitalism and democracy clash for control of political power. The power is nestled in the political contributions to the subservient public officials who sell themselves to gain and retain political power.

The wealthy and special interests in the financial, energy, health services (pharmaceuticals and medical insurance companies), criminal justice and defense industries, to name a select few, own the politicians who control the government.

The political social wedge issues, such as women and gay rights, disguised as Christian dogma, corrupt the teachings of Christ – love and respect for your neighbor - the brotherhood of man – and create a divisiveness based on ignorance and fear that is manipulated to the advantage of the political elite.

This political strategy is a diversion from the real issues. The social compact - affordable public education, health care, basic shelter, nutrition, peace and harmony with safety – is sacrificed for the benefit of the special interests and the religious right.

We are witnessing our criminal justice system as the government’s weapon of subjugation through criminalization. Our criminal justice system is nothing more than a conviction mill. The beneficiaries, at the expense of truth and justice, are the incarcerators, law enforcement, prosecutors and the judiciary (former prosecutors sitting behind the bench under the pretense of being objective and unbiased).

We are a consumer nation at the mercy of the financial institution, banks and credit card issuers, who gauge consumers to satisfy their greed and to compensate for the losses sustained in their financing of special interests.

The question is how and when are we going to take back our government? Are we capable of doing so?

The educated classes, primarily our youth, hold the trump card. Joined by Americans of good will, our significant majority, we must join forces to reign in the government. Only our collective effort will succeed in the great experiment of self government with which our fore fathers endowed us. For starters we must repudiate the politicos who hold themselves as the guardians of our morality, such as those advocating constitutional amendments to abrogate our rights of free choice, today aimed at gays and women’s rights, tomorrow at the rest of us who disagree with their dogmatic convictions.

Only when our government is representative of the vast majority of our citizenry - hard working, peace loving, sharing, respectful of our neighbors at home and abroad, and fair minded Americans who believe in truth and justice - can we honestly say that the government is our alter ego. At present it is our nemesis.

Don’t judge us by our government. And don’t judge us by the small minority of our misguided countrymen who control our government. We are overcoming our peccadilloes of the past, taking back our government and striving for a better America and a greater contributor to world peace and justice.
