Egypt: Shades of Mexican elections pre 1994

By Muhammad-Munir Fahmy

Dictator Mubarak was the only candidate in the Egyptian presidential election of Sept 1999. He got 96% of popular votes. In presidential election of Sept 2005, Dictator Mubarak ran with other 9 candidates. He got 88.6%. All other candidates got together 11.4%. Unbelievable!

In 2005 election Dictator Mubarak got 7.4% less than he got in 1999 election. His interior minister was in both elections the falsifier of election results. Only 23% of electorate voted in the election of 2005. Majority of electorate was aware of election falsification. Therefore, they were abstained from voting. They would have voted against Dictator Mubarak if the election had been held under the surveillance of international observers.

I have reported presidential election falsification of the Egyptian interior minister to international press and demanded his resignation for his dishonorableness. The interior minister has sent his police officers to harass me everywhere making my life miserable.

Police normally protects citizens in democratic countries where law and order prevail. The Egyptian interior minister and his police officers disregard freedom of speech that the constitution guarantees. Moreover, Egyptian police officers disregard the constitution and law. Where can I seek protection against terrorism of the interior minister and his police officers?

The interior minister has a good reason to terrorize me. He falsified the 3-phases of the parliamentary election too. The first phase was held on Nov 9 and its revision on Nov 15; the second was held on Nov 20 and its revision on Nov 26.  The third phase was held on Dec 1 and its revision on Dec 6. The Interior minister falsified all 3 phases of the parliamentary election results in favor of Dictator Mubarak's party.  Winners have become losers and losers have become winners. The interior minister ordered his police officers to intimidate and arrest supporters of opposition and prevent them from voting by closing many constituencies. Moreover, he ordered the transport of workers to vote in many constituencies in favor of Dictator Mubarak's party.

In spite of police harassment to me, I have intended to report election falsification to international press disregarding police harassment. I demand once more the resignation of the interior minister for his dishonorableness.
