The Scriptural Foundations of Love

The Scriptural Foundations of Love
By Luis G. Osio

Christianity’s first tenet is love, orderly love: God, neighbour and self. To know in order to love is thus the first requirement. Both, the knowledge and the love have never been easy. Some even hate other men thinking it's love of God. So the question is obvious: What can justify such commandment? What justifies such equation where the word love takes the place of the equal sign bonding God and man so? (With the obvious difference in order: God comes always first, of course!)

Genesis! Yes, Genesis gives the explanation justifying only Christianity from the beginning in “The Image and likeness” to which we were made. Only man in God’s image can justify the Incarnation as the purpose itself of Creation. Only the Incarnation gives full credibility to the feasibility of the commandment for love. For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting (John 3:16) A love capable of rapturing the hearts of men. An Incarnate God capable of loving to the point of madness the Cross signifies. The total self denial of Christ capable of fulfilling the word WHOLE which marks the First Commandment, yes, on the Cross!

God’s image must be loved, if love of God is to be believed, for if the image is not found worthy of love, what can make The Original love-worthy? To know in order to love! But what a mystery! We lack a sufficient knowledge, and thus love of God to be saints; and an adequate knowledge, and thus love of man to be, at least ever respectful, as a minimum, peaceful towards other men!

“I pursue sinners—said Jesus Christ to a nun, Josefa Menéndez— as justice pursues criminals. But justice seeks them in order to punish, I, in order to forgive.” Words to be believed only from He who gave up His life for our sins, who devised redemption by the conquest of men’s hearts, for, was it not He Who gave us this commandment: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole strength”. (Deut. 6:5)

Do you realize what WHOLE means?

It’s a commandment most difficult to fulfil, and even to believe as a serious proposal without the Incarnation meant to make Him known and loved as he ordered. He took the Cross to pay for our sins and preached only love and forgiveness. YET NO ONE HAS RECEIVED MORE OPPOSITION!

He is mercy itself! So hatred, pride, haughtiness and unforgiving arrogance reject Him! As Creator He is the only One caring for the perfection of all His creatures, so His words to Mary of the Trinity—another 20th century nun— fit perfectly with His Divinity:
“It is the sun that gives the earth its beauty and animates it. It is My grace that gives souls their beauty and that animates them. My Omnipotence is limited only by your liberty. It is with coal that I make diamonds. What would I not do with a soul, however black she might be, who would give herself to Me?”

This is real knowledge of God, leading to the fulfilment of His First Commandment. Without this knowledge of Christ the First Commandment doesn’t stand a chance! Nor do the rest.

Let it be known then, that those that oppose Him deny credibility to God in His very First Commandment!
