The Culture of Life Part II

The cultural clash we are living - the one represented by Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Rice-Wolfowitz-Bolton vs. virtually the rest of the world is not so much a clash as it is a crisis. A cultural crisis - a  cultural crisis whose epicenter is the United States, involving ethics and values, and the very vision of the future of humanity.

This cultural crisis is being abetted by the very language being employed in this conflict. It involves a monumental struggle over the meaning of precepts and words, including those at the core of our very existence: peace, truth, democracy and life itself.

The Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld vision is one of U.S. worldwide military and economic domination, yet outside of the Bush 2002 doctrine, this scheme has been painted more recently as a vision of worldwide democratization - this while this administration has been busy dismantling virtually every democratic institution, not only at home, but worldwide. Those associated with this vision, including the likes of Tom Delay and Newt Gingrich - are supported by a talk radio mindset that discourages checks and balances and dissent.

All this has come under the guise of the “war on terror” - a war so ill-defined that it is virtually a license for permanent worldwide war. Worse, this U.S.-led war is being waged with the assistance of some of the world's most unsavory military dictators.

Yet combined, these despots (primarily from the Middles East and the former Soviet Union) weld nowhere near the same amount of power as the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld troika. Since 9-11, international law and all its institutions have been not just cast aside by this administration, but actively undermined. The International War Crimes tribunal (the administration insists on its soldiers being exempt from its jurisdiction), Guantanamo (it's prison was built specifically to be out of the reaches of U.S. courts) and Abu Ghraib (emblematic of the widespread use of torture by U.S. forces) are the most salient examples of the flouting of international law.

This doesn't even include the administration's ordering of secret mass (post 9-11) arrests (without charges or legal representation) of thousands, nor does it include the subsequent and even more draconian USA Patriot Act (anyone can be targeted and presumed guilty until proven innocent). Neither does it include the assertion that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to the United States (green light for secret indefinite detentions and widespread torture and abuse).

All this amounts to the creation of a moated society based on fear - principally, the fear of outsiders - aided and abetted by a compliant media that has, in effect, succumbed to self-censorship.

With this track record - this radical cultural shift is being promoted as part of that worldwide democratization effort. This is what is producing a cultural crisis to the point of reaching critical mass. The camel's proverbial back is on the verge of breaking.

A culture built upon proven falsehoods (the need to rush to war because of the imminent threat Iraq posed to the United States and the free world) will eventually have to reconcile its moral scorecard with its children. The very meaning of truth is at stake. But there will never be reconciliation because admitting that the war was trumped up would be to admit not only to the war's illegality, but it would open up the administration to legal liabilities. And thus, the administration will instead continue to change its rationales  as to why it went to war.

Such a nation - with superpower status - that insists upon imposing its culture upon the world - will soon see its culture come under extreme scrutiny. And the verdict is in. The world is not clamoring to emulate that U.S. culture  of domination. That's why the cultural crisis is at home, not abroad.

At a certain point, a lie, pedaled as truth, will eventually crumble. Time does not convert falsehoods into truth, not does it convert immoral and illegal wars into moral and legal  ones. Militarism pedaled as peacemaking, while leaving death and destruction in its wake, will invariably cause dissonance or delusion. (Previously, mass delusion was winning hands down).

Preaching about a culture of life (respect for the unborn and the dying), while spreading and promoting permanent worldwide war (or the expansion of the death penalty) will invariably cause the world to ask: What is it about this culture we are supposed to be embracing or emulating? Now, U.S. citizens are beginning to ask the very same question. This is what is precipitating this cultural crisis.

La Cultura de Vida Parte II

El choque cultural cual nosotros estamos viviendo - representado por Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Rice-Wolfowitz-Bolton -- contra virtualmente el resto del mundo, no es tanto un choque sino una crisis. Una crisis cultural - una crisis cultural cuyo epicentro son los Estados Unidos, mientras involucrando ética y valores, y la visión del futuro de la humanidad.

Esta crisis cultural está siendo instigada por el mismo idioma empleado en este conflicto. Involucra una gran batalla sobre el significado de conceptos y palabras, incluyendo aquéllos conceptos quienes llegan al centro de nuestra misma existencia:  la paz, verdad, democracia y la vida misma.

La vision de Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld es uno de dominancia militar y económica mundial americano, aparte de la doctrina Bush 2002, este esquema se ha pintado más recientemente como una visión de democratización mundial - esto mientras esta administración ha estado  desmantelando virtualmente cada institución democrática, no sólo en casa, pero mundial. Aquéllos asociados con esta visión, incluso a Tom Delay y Newt Gingrich - se apoyan por un mindset de talk-radio que se openen a la discussion.

Todo esto ha venido bajo la guisa de la "guerra contra el terror" - una guerra que es virtualmente una licencia para la guerra mundial permanente. Más peor, esta guerra está emprendiéndose con la ayuda de algunos de los dictadores militares más insípidos del mundo.

Estos déspotas (principalmente naciones del Medio Oriente y las quienes formaban parte de la Unión Soviética) no alcancan tener (en combinación) la misma cantidad de poder como la troika del Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld. Desde  9-11, la ley internacional y todas sus instituciones simplemente no han sido lanzadas al lado por esta administración, pero activamente minada. El tribunal de Crímenes de Guerra Internacional - International War Crimes tribunal --  (la administración insiste que sus soldados esten exento de la  jurisdicción de ese corte mundial), Guantánamo (esa prisión fue construida específicamente para estar fuera de los alcances de cortes americanas) y Abu Ghraib (es emblematico del uso extendido de tortura por las fuerzas de EE.UU.) son los ejemplos más salientes de burlarse de la ley internacional.

Esto ni siquiera no incluye la administración que condujo los arrestos secretos y masivos despues del 9-11 (sin cargos o representación legal) de miles, ni incluye el subsecuente y más aun draconiano, el USA Patriot Act (cualquiera puede ser presumido culpable hasta que prueben que son  inocentes). Ni no incluye la aserción que las Convenciones de Ginebra no aplican a los Estados Unidos (la luz verde para las detenciones indefinidas secretas y tortura extendida y abuso).

Todos esto suma a la creación de una sociedad basada en el miedo - principalmente, el miedo a los extranjeros - ayudado e incitó por los medios de comunicaciónes dóciles que han, en el efecto, aceptado la autocensura.

Con estas huellas - este cambio cultural radical está promoviéndose la quizque democratización mundial. Esto es lo que está produciendo una crisis cultural al punto de alcanzar la masa crítica. La espalda del camello proverbial está al borde de romper.

Una cultura construida en las falsedades probados tendrá que reconciliarse con sus niños en el futuro. El mismo significado de verdad está en la estaca. Pero nunca habrá conciliación porque admitiendo que la guerra se falló a base de mentiras sería no sólo admitir la ilegalidad de la guerra, pero abriría la administración a las obligaciones legales. Y así, la administración continuará cambiando sus razones acerca de por qué fue a guerrear.

Tal nación - con el estado de la superpotencia - que insiste al imponer su cultura a todo el mundo - verá que su cultura tambien puede ser juzgada. Y el veredicto ya se ha hecho.  El mundo no está clamando para emular esa cultura de EE.UU. de dominación. Por eso la crisis cultural está en casa, no en el extranjero.

A cierto punto, una mentira, presentada como la verdad, eventualmente se descubre. Tiempo no convierte las falsedades en la verdad, ni las guerras inmorales e ilegales en guerras morales y legales. El militarismo presentado como parte de la paz, mientras dejando muerte y destrucción en su estela, invariablemente causará disonancia o engaño. (Previamente, el engaño de masa estaba ganando).

Predicando sobre una cultura de vida (el aborto y la muerte digna) mientras extendiendo y promoviendo la guerra mundial permanente, causará el mundo que pregunte:  ¿Qué es sobre esta cultura que se supone que nosotros debemos abrazar o emular? Ahora, los ciudadanos americanos están empezando a hacer la muy misma pregunta. Esto es lo que está precipitando esta crisis cultural.
