¿Que Paso? Why is Mexico a Third World Country?
By Oscar Padilla

I found your article on Mexican Billionaires... in the hispanicvista.com very interesting.

I find that not one of Mexico's billionaires have made any known sizeable contributions towards the welfare of the country.  In my many years of serving on boards of public service organizations, i.e., YMCA, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, etc, I find very few, if any, meaningful contributions from Hispanic's.

The United States has grown rich and powerful thanks to the generous support of its billionaires, such as Rockfeller, Ford, Gates, etc.   World famous educational institutions, such as Harvard, Duke, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, have all been founded and supported by billionaires.  Medical institutions such as Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins, Scripps Hospital in San Diego, have been founded and supported by American billionaires.   In industry and commerce, the United States has General Motors, Ford, Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble, Microsoft, etc, etc, providing employment to millions.

What has become of the maquiladoras?   Now I find most of what is worn, or used, is made outside the United States, but not in Mexico.  Que Paso.  Wha hoppen?   Mexico, a country rich in natural resources, and billionaires, yet is considered a third world country.  WHY???

There is an old story, you probably have heard it several times, permit me to repeat it:

One day, Saint Peter saw our Lord Jesus Christ approaching with a somber look.

He asked, "My Lord, I find you looking sad.  What, may I ask, is troubling you?"

Jesus Christ replied, "Peter, I just created a new country.  I am putting all natural resources, such as oil, copper, gold, fertile land, coastlines, etc., in this new country".

Saint Peter replied, "That's wonderful, but what saddens you?"

"That's where I'm putting the Mexican's", He replied."

I have heard this said many times from Mexican friends.

Mexico is situated right smack next door to the worlds richest, most powerful country in the world, yet it finds itself listed as a third world country.....why???
I have plans to write a book, that I hope will be an eye opener for Mexican's.  I welcome your comments.
