Hispanic Republicans: “Bush Right On Immigration”

The Republican National Hispanic Assembly (RNHA) made the following statements in response to President Bush’s nationally televised address on border security and immigration reform:

“The President’s comprehensive approach to immigration reform and border security is exactly what the nation needs to effectively secure our nation and fix America ’s broken immigration system,” said RNHA First Vice President Jose Fuentes.

“Securing our borders is of the utmost importance. The additional support by National Guard at the border, though temporary, will greatly assist border agents strengthen the border,” said Fuentes.

"President Bush sent the correct message to the American people, putting the point and tone of the debate in step with the values and principles of this nation. America can be a lawful society as well as a welcoming society. Securing our nation's border first and providing comprehensive immigration reform is the correct approach," said RNHA Treasurer, Xavier Neira.

“RNHA members across the country from Wisconsin to Florida viewed the President’s immigration speech with much anticipation,” said Fuentes. “We are very pleased the President directly addressed the nation on this most critical issue demonstrating his commitment to resolving this matter.”

Various chapters of the RNHA set up “watching parties” to view the president’s speech on immigration reform, his first domestic policy speech delivered from the Oval office.

The RNHA advocates comprehensive reform. The RNHA believes that the only effective means to control the broken immigration system is by dealing with all the issues - border security, interior enforcement and providing a guest worker program. The RNHA does not advocate a blanket amnesty and believes in stopping illegal immigration, not ending immigration.
