Irony & Laughter in a Time of War

Even though the whole world now knows that the Iraq war was illegally conjured up, president Bush continues to assert that he will press on with his war “for the sake of world peace.”

How funny is that?

That's like Rush Limbaugh going to an all-you-can-eat restaurant for the sake of world hunger.

For the record, the administration claims that despite no Iraq link to 911 or WMDs, the president - despite the bad intelligence -- acted in good faith. Iraq's infrastructure has been destroyed and tens of thousands of Iraqis are now dead, but he acted in good faith. Truth seems to be that the bad intelligence he received was the one he asked for (see his then counter-terrorism chief, Richard Clarke and the Downing Street memos).

Actually, it's not certain that the president's statements and behavior qualify as humor, tragicomedy, silliness, arrogance or sheer  incompetence.

For instance, what do you call creating a deck of cards out of Iraq's most wanted war criminals? Is this the proper way to hunt for people who've committed crimes against humanity? (Mimicking this stunt, there now exists a similar deck containing the president's own unquestioning minions). What do you call a president who (after shirking his war-time duties) dresses up as an airman to proclaim: “Mission Accomplished.” Approaching 2000 American deaths and the president still thinks he's fulfilling some kind of mission from God. And who can take him seriously when he continues to insist that the war is being fought by an all-volunteer force and that operating an unaccountable and secret prison system worldwide (where torture is not off-limits) is in accordance with the Geneva Conventions? And has anyone forgotten that this son of power and privilege has never actually been an actual cowboy and that he bought the Crawford Ranch right before taking office strictly to pretend to be a rugged “outsider” politician?

Unquestionably, this administration continues to provide an endless supply of lines (mostly related to the fear of the month) for upstart comics. For instance, why are we still using the  already discredited color-coded terrorism warning system? The country is apparently now permanently yellow.

How about his social security campaign? He tours the country to promote it. All the people in attendance (No Democrats allowed) at his highly choreographed events clap loudly, yet his policy goes nowhere fast. But wasn't everyone in his stacked townhall meetings smiling and nodding in agreement?

What about Condoleezza “Mushroom Cloud” Rice? She is out globetrotting, lecturing the world about corruption and the spread of democracy - while not admitting her own role in this illegitimate war. Isn't the foundation of democracy supposed to rest upon truth?

What's more corrupt and undemocratic than to foist an immoral war upon the entire world? Everything about this foisting is corrupt, including the blackmailing of smaller nations to support it and utilizing extortion to also get them to exempt the United States from the International War Crimes Tribunal. This is not to mention the rewarding of war profiteers.

On the spreading of freedom and democracy, perhaps Rice and the president ought to take a hard look at the USA Patriot Act - this as they prepare to expand it and make it permanent. There's nothing democratic about it. It threatens to make privacy obsolete and to turn the Constitution upside down, particularly the bedrock principle of innocent until proven guilty. Welcome Big Brother Government.

There's actually little humor there except that as Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska recently pointed out, the president and his minions appear to be disconnected from reality.

Their estrangement from reality seems to be contagious… especially if you happen to be a California voter. If it's not bad actors, it' bad politicians. First, they gave us Tricky Dick Nixon. Then Ronald Reagan. Now, it's the Governator. But who do the voters have to blame but themselves? They again voted for image over substance. Arnold Schwarzenegger's only base of support nowadays seems to be the anti-immigrant crowd. (He has been lauding the anti-immigrant Minutemen vigilante group).

Schwarzenegger may yet one day become president of the United States. And only Florida Gov. Jeb Bush - who is trying to put Michael Schaivo behind bars -- may be the only person standing in his way. So why am I not laughing?

LA IRONÍA & RISA EN UN TIEMPO DE GUERRA

Aunque el mundo entero ahora sabe que la guerra de Irak se inició ilegalmente,  el presidente Bush continúa afirmando que él seguirá adelante con su guerra "para avanzar la causa de la paz mundial.”

¿Está bromeando?

Eso es como si el hablador Rush Limbaugh cenara con gula para eliminar el hambre mundial.

Para estar claro, la administración mantiene  que a pesar de que no hubo ningúna conexión por parte de Irak a los ataques del 11 de Septiembre del 2001 y que no mantenía armas nucleares, el presidente - a pesar de la mala inteligencia -- actuó con buena fe. La infraestructura de Irak se ha destruido y miles de iraquíes están ahora muertos, pero él actuó con buena fe. La verdad parece ser que la mala inteligencia  que él recibió fue lo que él demandó (vea su entonces jefe de contra-terrorismo, Richard Clarke y los Downing Street memorándums).

Realmente, no está claro que las declaraciones del presidente y su conducta califican como  humor, tragicomedia, tonterías, arrogancia o pura incompetencia.

¿Por ejemplo, qué se le llama crear tarjetas de poker para cazar a los quienes han cometido  crímenes contra la humanidad? (Ahora existen tarjetas similares conteniendo a los propios socios del presidente). Qué se le llama a un presidente que se viste (después de evitar sus deberes del guerra cuando el fue joven) como un aviador para proclamar el fin de la guerra. Acercándonos a 2000 muertes Norteamericanas y el presidente todavía piensa que él está cumpliendo algúna misión de Dios. ¿Y quién puede tomarlo en serio cuándo él continúa insistiendo que la guerra se está luchándo por una fuerza voluntaria y que operar un sistema mundial de prisiónes secretos (donde se utiliza la tortura) es de acuerdo con las Convenciones de Ginebra? ¿Y quien se ha olvidado que este hijo de poder y privilegio nunca ha sido realmente un vaquero real y que él compró el Rancho de Crawford (rancho de adorno) antes de tomar su oficina estrictamente para pretender ser un político fuera de la influencia de Washington?

Indiscutiblemente, esta administración continúa proporcionando un suministro interminable de líneas (principalmente relacionado al “miedo del mes”) para los cómicos. ¿Por ejemplo, por qué nosotros todavía estamos usando el sistema de colores para combatir el terrorismo? El país es aparentemente ahora permanentemente amarillo - color de cobardes.

¿Y como le va su campaña del seguro social? Él recorre el país para promoverlo. Todomundo en la asistencia (ningún Demócrata) a sus eventos favorablemente coreografiados aplauden ruidosamente, pero su política es aparentemente rechazada por todos. ¿Pero que no todomundo en sus reuniones estában de acuerdo?

¿Y que ondas con la Condoleezza Rice? Mientras ella habla por todo el mundo sobre la corrupción y la democracia - ella no ha admitido su propio papel en esta guerra ilegítima. ¿No se supone que la fundación de la democracia está basada en la verdad?

¿Que es más corrupto y antidemocrático que forzar a todo el mundo participar en una guerra inmoral? El uso del chantaje y la extorsión de naciones  pequeñas para apoyar la guerra y para también conseguir que ellos exenten a los Estados Unidos del Tribunal Internacional  contra los Crímenes de Guerra también es corrupto.

Si quiere extender la libertad y la democracia, quizás Rice y el presidente deben echar una mirada dura al USA Patriot Act. Esto lo deben hacer antes de que ellos preparen extenderlo y hacerlo permanente. No hay nada democrático sobre él. Amenaza hacer los derechos civiles  obsoleto y volverse la Constitución al revés, particularmente el principio de inocente hasta probado culpable. Parece que ya hemos llegado al Gobierno del “Big Brother.”

No hay humor allí, sólo que el Senador Chuck Hagel, Republicano de Nebraska, recientemente notó que el presidente y sus socios aparecen ser desconectados de la realidad.

Su alejamiento de la realidad parece ser contagioso,  sobre todo para los votantes de California. Si no eligen a los actores malos, eligen a los malos políticos. Primero, ellos nos dieron “Tricky Dick Nixon.” Entonces Ronald Reagan. Ahora, es el “Governator.” ¿Pero a quién culpamos? Los votantes votaron de nuevo por la imagen encima de la substancia. La base de apoyo de Arnold Schwarzenegger parece ser solamente del sector anti-inmigrante. (Él ha estado apoyando al grupo anti-inmigrante, Minutemen).

Todavía es possible que un día Arnold Schwarzenegger puede ser presidente de los Estados Unidos. Y sólo el gobernador de la Florida, Jeb Bush - quién está intentando encarcelar al Michael Schiavo -- puede ser la única persona que está de pie de sus planes. ¿Así por qué no me estoy riéndo?
