ON: Hispanics

November.

Enjoyed the article
on the website, as well as enjoying the
informative website overall. Just
as an item of information, there are
currently over 5,600** Latino elected
officials, which include, U.S.
Representatives, State Officials, State
Legislators, County Officials, Municipal
Officials, Judicial/Law Enforcement,
Education/School Board and Special
District Officials.
I agree with your
assessment about the incumbent protection
plan in redistricting, but we also
believe that there will be significant
gains by Latino candidates on the State
legislative level. Real gains in Congress
are at least another decade away.

**NOTE: The article
made reference to there being 1640
elected Latinos in the US it
should have read 5640. We regret
the typographical error.)

I was wondering if your columns
appear elsewhere in Spanish, or whether
you'd mind if we translated them and
posted them in our website, http://www.abriendo-caminos.com/index.shtml
giving you full credit.
ABOUT: Illegal
a false, absurd and grossly racist

You can hardly call
yourself a "patriotic" American
when you openly condone criminal law
breaking and attempt to whitewash it by
attacking the truth!
The burden the
illegal immigrants are putting on the
American society in every conceivable
manner is factually proven!
From the economics
of health care, (the hospital emergency
rooms for a start) to the welfare system,
to the law enforcement system, the prison
system (the percentage of prison inmates
for instance) and many, many other
impacts!
Tell me, are you an
illegal or do you make your living off of
them, such as Jesse Jackson and Al
Sharpton do off of the black people by
creating racial strife?
I care where my tax
dollars and my quality of life go!
There are plenty of
American citizens who need and deserve
help! I suggest you go find an honest job
where you don't have to spin doctor the
truth to make a buck!
Veterans
benefits in danger action to stop
this is required NOW!

Opponents of
concurrent receipt legislation have
attacked on another front. The fiscal
year 2003 appropriations bill for VA,
H.R. 5605, includes a provision that
would effectively block veterans from
receiving both their earned military
retired pay and compensation for
service-connected disabilities under any
new concurrent receipt legislation
Congress might enact. Although both the
House and Senate passed concurrent
receipt provisions in their respective
versions of the defense authorization
bill, the Bush administration has been
forcefully opposing these provisions and
has held out the threat of a veto if the
final legislation is sent to the
President with the provisions included.
Now, the VA, HUD,
and Independent Agencies Subcommittee of
the House Appropriations Committee has
inserted provisions in its bill that
would bar the Department of Veterans
Affairs from deciding any claim for
service connection that, if allowed,
would entitle the veteran to compensation
in addition to retired pay under any
newly enacted concurrent receipt
legislation. For example, if a veteran
with 22 years of service loses both legs
due to hostilities in Afghanistan, he
could not have his claim for service
connection acted on by VA.
We must meet this
new threat with the full strength of our
grassroots power. Contact your member of
the House of Representatives immediately
either by telephone, the prepared e-mail
message below, or your own e-mail message
to register your strong objections to
these provisions in section 114 under
title I of H.R. 5605. Ask your House
member for a commitment to oppose these
provisions.
