¡AY, Ay, ay! Mejico lindo, what have they done to you?
By Ricardo Castañón/HispanicVista.com

Mexican news media exploit negative sensational events only. They address the audience's morbidity; gossip sells ads. Its sinister message though, only begins to scratch the surface. They don't talk about the real drama, the poverty the people have to muddle in, the lack of incentives, the desolated fields, the dried rivers, the polluted streets, lakes and beaches.

The once glorious colors of the national flag have been stained with the mud and blood political corruption and impunity have splashed on it. With very few exceptions, most everyone is for grabs! Those in any kind of a position to make a difference do not use it to serve, but to outsmart others and each other; their middle name should be "Mr. or Mrs. Longnails."

Hunger, illness and misery are everywhere. Villages are desolated. In any reasonably populated towns, the economic problem triggers crime and violence; burglaries, pickpockets, car-theft, rapes and kidnapping; prostitution and child pornography are a common occurrence. In the nation's capital the problem is only worse. For crying-out-loud! If sitting in your car, driver or passenger, with the window down while waiting at a stop-light, kids in their teens posing as street vendors, would grab whatever jewelry you may have at their reach and make a run for it!

That's not the way it used to be! That's not the way it should be! What are these Harvard educated politicians doing to the "Horn of Plenty"? Are they determined to exhaust it? Their white-collar robbing and grabbing has no limit. Their worse sin though, is the moral, the negative patriotic impact they are inflicting into the minds of the people. Whether they know it or ignore it, the damage is irreversible. Hence the exodus of most able men to the USA.

The families left behind depend mostly on the remittances sent by their breadwinners, and now, the federal government has placed its greedy eyes on that income and wants to TAX IT! ...(?)... Please! Clone Benito Juarez! Again and again!

Still, if I die while away, pretend that I'm into deep sleep. Ship back my bonny cadaver wrapped in a bright multi-color sarape, my face covered with a straw hat, my ears plugged with cotton balls to stop rumors from what's going on the surface, tire-tread-soled huaraches on my calloused feet, and the whole bundle dropped into the deepest gorge of the Copper Canyon.

"De el arbol caído, todos quieren hacer leña!" (“From the fallen tree, everyone wants to make firewood.”)

¿Verdad que...Si?

Patrick,

Would you give me a quote to use on the back flap of my
"Simple Simon's" book?

Please note on the copy I sent to you, that there are
two unsigned quotes. I'm printing a new batch and would
love to have your endorsement. You might not want to
adopt either one of the ones already there and prefer
one of your own.

In either case, I wish you would do that for me.

Un fuerte abrazo!

Ricardo...
